Over half of Italians shop at home. The neighborhood supermarket is back in fashion with its traditional strengths: accessibility and courtesy of the staff. The neighborhood store has also innovated, bringing shopping directly to the home and opening up to online. It is the photograph taken by Confcommercio in the book "Il negozio alimentare" of the "Le Bussole" series. Over 55% of Italian consumers buy in the neighborhood supermarkets and the satisfaction index is highest for specialized independent stores.
"You go back to shopping at home - explained the president of Confcommercio, Carlo Sangalli - also because the neighborhood store has been innovated by making the online an ally". Food e-commerce is at its lowest level in Italy, 0.5% against 6% in France, but it is destined to grow. In 2015, online supermarket spending marked a 57% boom and food ready in delivery (directly from the restaurant) recorded a + 66% in 2016.
